Speed Watch Trailers Show Drivers Their Stuff
15 locations targeted to slow down drivers

SEATTLE -Slow down!

In the continued effort to increase pedestrian safety, Mayor Greg Nickels has the speed watch trailers out on the street. The trailers, which help drivers realize when they’re going too fast, have been deployed in areas around community centers and neighborhoods. After school starts, the trailers will also be placed on school routes.

“Summer is a great time for kids and adults to be walking around Seattle, and we’re doing everything we can to make it a safe experience,” Nickels said. “By helping drivers be aware of how fast they are going, we can also remind them to slow down.”

The trailers are mounted with display boards that flash vehicles’ speeds as they drive by. Speed limits are also posted, so drivers can make immediate adjustments to their speed.

Speed watch trailers are now in place and will be at the following locations once a week, over the next 15 weeks:

  • 9th Ave SW, between SW Henderson and SW Trenton Streets
  • 15th Ave S, between S Pearl and South Dawson Streets
  • 35th Ave SW, between SW 104th and SW 102nd Streets
  • 15th Ave S, between S Hill and S Plum Streets
  • Roosevelt Way NE, between NE 83rd and NE 84th Streets
  • 3rd Ave NW, between NW 81st and NW 82nd Streets
  • E Union St, between 32nd and 33rd Avenues
  • 8th Ave S, between S Concord and S Henderson Streets
  • N 80th St, between Stone Ave N & Green Lake Dr N
  • E Aloha St, between 18 Ave E & 19 Ave E
  • S Genesee St, between 39 Ave S & Cascadia Ave S
  • NW 65th St, between 18 Ave NW & 17 Ave NW
  • NE 60th St, between 34 Ave NE & 35 Ave NE
  • 3rd Ave NW, between NW 107 St & NW 110 Streets
  • Greenwood Ave N, between N 130th and N 132nd Streets

The trailers are not a replacement for law enforcement; on the contrary, the radar displays may be staffed by Seattle Police Department who can give tickets for traffic violations.

The pedestrian safety campaign is an initiative of Mayor Nickels’ to increase pedestrian safety and make Seattle streets safer. The campaign includes public service announcements, new signs and billboards with the theme, “Think of the Impact You Could Make,” and re-marking or upgrading 110 crosswalks at 50 intersections.
