Seattle’s municipal cable channel wins four government programming awards

TVSea, the city of Seattle’s municipal cable channel, brought home four awards from the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) 13th annual Government Programming Awards. Competing against other large cities across the country, TVSea won four second place awards in the following categories:

    • Overall Excellence in Government Programming;
    • Innovative Programming (for its introduction to the "Seattle Works!" video);
    • Interview/Talk Show (for the Seattle Police Department’s "Beyond The Badge" program); and
    • Government Channel Website (for its Web site: http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/tvsea)

Earlier this summer, TVSea received awards in the Alliance for Community Media’s annual Home Town USA Video Festival. "Beyond The Badge" received a Judge’s Choice Award, and the channel took first prize in both the Documentary Profile category for its "Cedar River Watershed" program and the Government Profile category for its "Neighborhood Matching Fund" program.

In early September, the Seattle City Council set aside $36,000 for a new city-generated TV show. The $36,000 — generated by cable franchise fees — will pay for a new camera and production costs of two pilots. The 30-minute program, highlighting issues before the City Council and new city programs, will debut in early 2000, running twice a month.
