FORUM ON CRIME PREVENTION Seattle’s Asian Pacific Islander Senior Citizens Are Targeted
SEATTLE— City Councilmembers and the Seattle Police Department will gather for a special community forum addressing the recent rash of strong-arm robberies and burglaries in Southeast Seattle against Asian Pacific Islander Senior Citizens Thursday, December 9th, 7:00 PM, at the Southeast Senior Center, 4655 South Holly Street (intersection of S Holly and Rainier Ave. S).
“It’s crucial that we gather together to assure the communities involved that the issues are being addressed and that we will all work hard to make our communities safe again,” said Councilmember David Della.
The Seattle Police Department reports that at least sixty-five elderly people, many of them Asian Pacific Islander women, have been robbed since June in Southeast Seattle. All of the robberies have occurred during daylight hours. The Seattle Police Department announced on November 24th that eight people were arrested in connection with these crimes.
Council President Jan Drago and Councilmembers David Della, Richard Conlin, Jean Godden, Nick Licata, Peter Steinbrueck, Tom Rasmussen, Jim Compton and Richard McIver will host this important event focusing on safety and Seattle Police Department’s response. Information and tips about preventing similar crimes will be discussed.
Throughout Seattle, there have been 842 strong-arm robberies in 2004, 197 of them have been in the South Precinct. The goal of this forum is to promote a greater awareness for practicing safe living habits over the coming holiday season.
