COUNCIL HELPS “HAL” THE BOOKMOBILE DELIVER BOOKS TO KIDS
Councilmembers assist Hal on Monday morning’s busiest stop

SEATTLE— Councilmembers help Hal—the Seattle Public Library’s colorful flagship Bookmobile—deliver books to pre-school children at Perkins School (6550 Ravenna NE) in northeast Seattle, Monday morning, November 22nd at 10:30 a.m. Monday afternoon Councilmembers meet in City Hall for the final vote to approve the 2005-2006 City Budget.

“When we think of the Bookmobile, we think of its indispensable services to our homebound, disabled and elderly,” says Council President Jan Drago. “But the bookmobile also brings books to kids. We restored these services too because we believe it must be easy and exciting for the next generation to read.” The City Council restored Bookmobile services to over 90 childcare centers throughout the City.

Hal will now be able to continue to deliver books to the kids at Perkins Preschool—one of the Bookmobile’s busiest stops—once a month. Service to this location would have been cut entirely if the City Council hadn’t restored the program to the City’s budget. When the bookmobile arrives, teachers and kids at Perkins will come out to turn in the books they’ve read and check out new books.

“Kids and books go together and should never be separated,” said Budget Committee Chair Richard McIver. “We’re bringing them books because we want them to grow up fully aware of the joy of reading.”

The Council added $500,000 to the City budget to restore Bookmobile services and enable the Seattle Public Library to retain monthly service for many homebound individuals and childcare and retirement/nursing home facilities. Some existing clients will receive services only once every eight weeks.

Perkins Preschool is located at 6550 Ravenna NE. Directions: take I-5 North and the NE 65th Street exit. Turn right onto NE 65th and left onto Ravenna Ave. NE.
