Mayor Nickels Announces New Youth Council Members
25 Young People Appointed to Serve
SEATTLE – Mayor Greg Nickels appointed 25 high school students representing various Seattle neighborhoods to serve on his 2004-2005 Mayor’s Youth Council. The Council provides a forum for youth to engage with city leaders, impact government policies and strengthen their leadership skills.
“We need fresh ideas and perspectives in city government,” said Nickels. “I had some great opportunities to find my civic passion when I was young and it is important to extend those opportunities to teens in Seattle. Members of my Youth Council will connect with city leaders and their community about important issues – plus, they’ll get great leadership experience, too.”
The Youth Council had its first meeting on October 21st and will meet with city officials twice a month to discuss youth involvement in local government. Additionally, members will gather ideas and concerns from young people throughout Seattle to share with the Mayor and various other city leaders.
Mayor Nickels is partnering with 2V/Act, a community-based organization formerly known as the Seattle Youth Involvement Network, to coordinate the council.
“2V/Act is excited to collaborate with Mayor Nickels to cultivate youth leadership in our city,” Executive Director Liz Vivian expresses. “The Mayor’s Youth Council gives youth a direct voice in city decision-making and acknowledges the hopes and needs of young people. It nurtures youth to be leaders today and gives them the skills, knowledge and inspiration to take an active role in democracy for the rest of their lives.”
“It is easier to watch other shows than the news, or go play basketball or hang out than go to meetings. But I think getting involved is worth it. We can have an impact. I’m pretty passionate about it," said Emma Roberts, a senior at Garfield High School and past Youth Council member.
The Mayor’s Youth Council will culminate with a citywide Youth Town Hall to be held in the spring of 2005.
