Parks and PAWS Prepare to
Wrap up First Phase of Goose Program Wednesday

What: Volunteers from the Seattle Goose Program, a cooperative project of Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), will assemble at South Lake Union Park to help conclude the first phase of this year’s goose-management plan by readying the area for the application of goose repellent. This will be the fourth and final application of the repellent, called FlightControl PLUS, for the year.

Where: South Lake Union Park, 860 Terry Avenue N

When: 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004

Why: Under a 2004 agreement, Parks and PAWS are working together to control the Canada goose population by continuing a series of non-lethal means. FlightControl PLUS is a commercially available goose repellent designed to keep Canada geese away from recreation and other areas where their presence interferes with human activities. To geese, turf treated with the repellent looks different in the ultraviolet light spectrum, and feeding on it causes them a mild case of indigestion. Geese become conditioned to avoid feeding in areas treated with FlightControl PLUS.

Before the repellent is sprayed, Goose Program volunteers will hold a work party to sweep the park of goose droppings that have accumulated while resident geese were "challenging" the repellent over the course of this demonstration.

Parks and PAWS will continue to fine-tune the Goose Program by combining the use of FlightControl PLUS with methods such as using dogs and lasers to relocate geese over the next several weeks at South Lake Union.

The Seattle Goose Program continues to be active in four other city parks this summer: Gas Works, Madison, Matthews, and Green Lake.
