City to Hold Public Meeting on Comcast Franchise Renewal
Seeks Testimony on Future Broadband Needs and Customer Satisfaction
The City's Office of Cable Communications will soon be negotiating a new contract with cable provider Comcast, whose franchise is up for renewal in January 2006. Currently, Comcast serves approximately 170,000 subscribers in Seattle. Prior to negotiations, the City is asking Seattle cable subscribers about their satisfaction with Comcast's service and about the future cable-related needs of our community.
A meeting to take public testimony about Comcast will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, 5:00-7:00 p.m., in City Council Chambers, 2nd floor of City Hall, 5th Avenue between James and Cherry.
Hosting the public meeting are Seattle’s Citizens Telecommunications and Technology Advisory Board and Councilmember Jim Compton, Chair of the City Council Utilities and Technology Committee. It will be broadcast live on the Seattle Channel (Comcast channel 21, Millennium channel 28) and aired live over the Internet at the Seattlechannel.org. Public comment may also be submitted to Councilmember Compton at jim.compton@seattle.gov or through an on-line survey at www.seattle.gov/cable/refranchising.
Seattle’s Office of Cable Communications (OCC) has overall responsibility for issues related to cable television and cable Internet service for Seattle residents. The Office oversees the City's non-exclusive cable television franchises with Comcast and Millennium Digital Media through enforcement of the franchise agreements, with an emphasis on citizen concerns. The OCC investigates and mediates consumer/cable company issues and enforces the Cable Customer Bill of Rights, the strongest cable privacy protections in the country.
