Democracy Portal Wins National "Best of the Web" Award
Seattle Channel And Website Win Best City Government Application

SEATTLE — Seattle’s municipal cable television channel and its website, known jointly as the Democracy Portal, were named Best City Government Application by the Center for Digital Government, an international research and advisory institute on information technology (IT) in government and education.

"Government portals have truly become the citizen gateway to services as sites become more robust and easier to navigate," said Cathilea Robinett, executive director of the Center for Digital Government and a Best of the Web judge for all of its eight years.

The Seattle Channel is a multimedia organization providing compelling content on cable television and the Internet that focuses on life in the City of Seattle. It covers government, community and culture with a variety of programs, features and interactive possibilities, including call-in, chat, and e-mail, with the goal of engaging the people of Seattle. The Seattle Channel televises gavel to gavel coverage of City Council meetings and many of the Mayor’s press conferences.

The Seattle Channel also produces a variety of programs, including Ask the Mayor, Beyond the Badge, City Inside/Out, City A-Go-Go, Neighborhood News, Seattle Spotlight, and City Stream. It is carried by Comcast Cable on Channel 21 and Millennium Cable on Channel 28 to more than 160,000 homes.

The Seattle Channel’s web site, www.seattlechannel.org, provides scheduling information, news updates, links to related information, a weekly viewer poll, video-streaming and video archives. It is administered by the Department of Information Technology.
