Author and activist Sherman Alexie is the featured guest at the 8th annual celebration of Seattle Human Rights Day on Wednesday, December 10, noon–1:30 p.m. in the Dome Room of the Arctic Building, corner of 3rd and Cherry in downtown Seattle. The 2003 recipients of the Distinguished Citizens for Human Rights Award also will be announced at the event.

As part of this year’s celebration, "A Night to Honor First Nations" will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Discovery Park. The event will feature food, drumming, dance, and a panel discussion on the status of human rights in Indian Country.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Sherman Alexie is an internationally acclaimed poet and prose writer of 16 books to date, including his recent short story collection, "Ten Little Indians." A Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Indian from Wellpinit, Washington, Mr. Alexie also is an accomplished public speaker on a variety of political and social issues. He lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife and two sons.

Seattle Human Rights Day is sponsored by the Seattle Office for Civil Rights, the Seattle Human Rights Commission, King County Civil Rights Commission, WA State Human Rights Commission, and Seattle Chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA. The event commemorates the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted December 10, 1948.
