Seattle ties for second as one of most ‘digital cities’ in nation
Survey ranks cities who use digital technology to deliver services to citizens
SEATTLE — Seattle Mayor Paul Schell announced today Seattle has tied for second as one of the most "digital cities" in the nation according to a recent survey conducted by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology Magazine. The survey explored digital technology in our nation’s local jurisdictions with the "Digital Technology Survey."
Sponsored by TekInsight, the 2001 Digital Cities Survey examined which municipal services are on-line, what forms are available electronically, what information is offered to the public and whether the public can send on-line feedback to city officials. Cities were also asked about their IT management structure — specifically, if there is an executive IT position that oversees technology policies and operations, and much more.
Seattle, Chicago and New York all tied for second place for cities with a population of more than 250,000. Honolulu took first place honors in that category.
Seattle officials were pleased with the honors. "We’re committed to improving service delivery to our citizens, and using digital technology is just one more example of how we’re broadening government’s accessibility," Seattle Mayor Paul Schell said. "A tremendous amount of useful information is available via Seattle’s web site and government access cable channel."
TVSea, the city of Seattle’s government access channel, was recently named best local government access channel by its peers. In September 2001, TVSea collected five first-place awards and other honors at the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) Conference, held in Miami.
Last year, Seattle’s Public Access Network (PAN) web site received first-place honors in the local government category of Government Technology magazine’s 2000 Best of Web competition.
