"Discover Ability" Exhibit Celebrates Persons with Disabilities
Did you know that Harriet Tubman had narcolepsy?
Did you know that Albert Einstein was thought to have had a learning disability?

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. "Discover Ability," an exhibit featuring persons with disabilities who have excelled in art, science, government, human rights and other fields, will be on display October 16-23, 2001, in the Lobby of the Arctic Building located downtown at 700 Third Avenue and October 24-31, 2001, in the 3rd floor Lobby of the Dexter Horton Building.

Persons with disabilities are the most underutilized labor pool in the country. Of the 54 million people in the U.S. with disabilities, many have demonstrated their abilities in executive, administrative and managerial fields. They have been successful in such a diversified areas as marketing, sales, administrative support, service industries, construction trades, manufacturing, transportation and professional and technical fields. The exhibit designed by the Seattle Office for Civil Rights is to encourage people to focus on people’s abilities, not their disabilities.

The Seattle Office for Civil Rights investigates cases of discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations, and provides technical assistance and training to businesses and individuals regarding a range of disability issues. If you would like to receive a Disability Employment Resource Guide for Employers or for more information, please contact the Seattle Office for Civil Rights at or (206) 684-4500 (voice) or 684-4503 (TTY).
