Seattle’s municipal cable channel garners top honors in national competition

SEATTLE — TVSea, the city of Seattle’s government access channel, was recently named best local government access channel by its peers. In September, TVSea collected five first-place awards and other honors at the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (NATOA) Conference, held in Miami, Fla.

NATOA received almost 1,000 entries from cities, counties and towns across the United States. TVSea won the most prestigious award — First Place for Overall Excellence in Government Programming for the largest cities. (Earlier this year, TVSea was selected second in a similar nationwide competition.)

The NATOA awards recognize excellence in broadcast, cable, multimedia and electronic programming developed by municipal agencies. NATOA is the professional organization that brings together those responsible for regulating telecommunication policies and those who program government channels all over the country.

In all, TVSea won eight NATOA awards: Overall Excellence in Government Programming was the big prize, but four other TVSea entries won first place honors, two were awarded second place, and one finished third in its category:

  • "Just Like Noah", a 15-minute documentary chronicling the daily life of one particular homeless man, Noah Gray, won First Place in two categories: Documentary, Social Issues and Documentary Profile. In one of these categories, every judge gave it a perfect score.
  • Two TVSea videos tied for First Place in the Documentary Event category.
"Stuwe’yug w" captures the discovery of ancient Native American artifacts at the recently opened Tolt Water Treatment Plant and shows how archeologists worked hand-in-hand with Seattle Public Utility officials to preserve this important legacy.
  • "Experience This!" shared First Place in this category. This video offers viewers a dazzling visual tour of the Experience Music Project.
  • "Experience This!" also won a second place award in the category for innovative programming.

TVSea’s web site (http://www.cityofseattle.net/tvsea) won second place for all government channel websites. This was the fourth time TVSea’s website won a national award in the past three years.

When the Feb. 28, 2001, earthquake struck Seattle, TVSea was taping a city council meeting. That footage was seen all over the United States and around the world. TVSea utilized the same footage in a station promo, which won Third Place in the station promo category.

Copies of the award-winning programs are available from TVSea. A compilation tape can be viewed on-line at: http://www2.ci.seattle.wa.us/media/detail.asp?ID=348 and links to other award winners can be found in TVSea’s streaming video archive: http://www2.ci.seattle.wa.us/media/

TVSea can be seen on Channel 21 for those in Seattle with AT& T as their cable provider and on Channel 28 for Millennium cable subscribers.
