City of Seattle to Paint Side of Alaskan Way Viaduct at Union Street
Highlights major connection from First Avenue to waterfront

SEATTLE – On Tuesday, May 27, the Office of the Waterfront will begin painting a 62-foot span of the exterior, eastern face the Alaskan Way Viaduct at Union Street. The purpose of the painting project is to create a strong visual connection between the waterfront and downtown.

This painting project is the result of a strong partnership between the City of Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation and local waterfront businesses to identify ways to keep the waterfront active, and easy to access and navigate during construction.

Prior to painting, the surface of the viaduct needs to be cleaned and primed. Power washing was completed on Wednesday, May 21 and primer application began on Thursday, May 22. Painting is expected to be complete on Wednesday, May 28, depending on weather.

Due to the Memorial Day weekend, no work will occur Saturday, May 24 through Monday, May 26.

No paint is being applied to the driving surface of the viaduct and there should be no impacts to traffic on the viaduct due to this work.

The Waterfront Program replaces the Elliott Bay Seawall, and designs and constructs improvements to the waterfront in downtown Seattle. Improvements include a new pedestrian promenade, a two-way cycle track, a new Alaskan Way that accommodates all modes of travel, two rebuilt public piers, new parks and paths, and new pedestrian connections between the city and waterfront.
