Medgar Evers Roof repair work begins

Construction fencing will be put in place on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Medgar Evers Pool to prepare for the new roof and coating construction work. Seattle Parks and Recreation awarded the construction contract to Biwell Construction for the roof, coating and skylights. Medgar Evers Pool is located at 500 23rd Ave. next to Garfield High School and Garfield Community Center.

The pool will be open during the coating work and will be closed intermittently to allow for new skylight installation later in the year. For other pool locations and hours please visit http://www.seattle.gov/parks/pools.asp

Parks and Biwell Construction will work with the community to minimize impacts of construction. During the roof coating work the contractor will be using a product that has a pungent odor. The odor dissipates in a timely manner. The contractor will work with Parks to keep the facility well-ventilated and open to the public.

Seattle Parks anticipates the project to be completed in December 2013. The Parks and Green Spaces Levy Oversight Committee recommended that levy inflation funding will be allocated to much needed major maintenance projects such as this roof improvement project. The Levy allocates $1.6 million for planning, design and construction. The Levy established an inflation adjustment for development projects intended to ensure that, should there be inflation in the construction industry, projects built in the later years of the Levy would have sufficient funding. To date, levy projects have not experienced inflation and have benefited from a competitive bid climate.
