Draft Environmental Impact Statement available for proposed arena
SEATTLE - Today the city of Seattle published the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed multi-purpose arena in Seattle’s Stadium District.
The city solicited public input to help inform the scope of the environmental analysis starting in November 2012. There was an additional public comment period when the applicant submitted a Master Use Permit that began April 2013. The public comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement is for 45 days, ending Monday, September 30. The review started by looking at 21 sites meeting the minimum property size and zoning to accommodate a potential arena.
After applying transportation, economic and other review criteria, the Department of Planning and Development has narrowed down the list of viable arena sites to three. Those include the environmental review of a new arena at KeyArena in Seattle Center, Memorial Stadium adjacent to Seattle Center and three alternatives for the site in SoDo. For all the identified impacts, mitigation measures have been identified and will be further refined as the review process continues.
Public hearings on the Draft Environmental Impact statement are scheduled as follows:
September 10, in the Bertha Knight Landes Room at Seattle City Hall; the other on Thursday, September 19, in the Fidalgo Room at Seattle Center. Both will start at 6 p.m.
The City expects to publish a Final Environmental Impact statement in the 1st quarter of 2014.
