Teen chefs compete to be Seattle’s Top Teen Chef
Seattle Parks and Recreation program fights childhood obesity
Some of Seattle’s top, and youngest chefs, will compete for the title of Top Teen Chef while learning how to shop for and cook healthy foods. Top Teen Chef, a teen experiential program at Seattle Parks and Recreation’s community centers, will hold its final competition on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Garfield Community Center, 2323 E Cherry St.
The Great Pumpkin Finale competition includes teams from five community centers throughout the city – Hiawatha, High Point, Garfield, Ravenna-Eckstein and South Park – and will feature pumpkin as the ingredient that chefs have to use. All chef-testants are between the ages of 13 and 18.
The teams of five teens have as long as they need to prep, but only 30 minutes to cook their healthy creations. Winners will receive the title of Top Teen Chef and an assortment of prizes.
Top Teen Chef was created through Seattle Parks’ Late Night program in 2008 as a way to teach teens basic life skills while also combating epidemic childhood obesity rates. (Today, there are three times as many obese children and teens as there were 20 years ago.) Two preliminary competitions led to this finale.
Chefs are judged on preparing a dish that is economical, low-fat and tastes good. Judges quiz contestants on how much the meal cost to prepare and how many calories are in it.
“This program helps teens understand what it takes to feed themselves healthy foods on a budget,” said Cindy Sandino-Chang, Experiential Learning Coordinator for Seattle Parks and Recreation. “And they have a great time while learning.”
The event will feature cooking demonstrations from Seattle Central Community College and the American Heart Association. Healthy food blogger Margaux J. Rathbun will attend, as will Tree Swing, a local organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity. Deputy Mayor Darryl Smith will announce the winning team.
The public is invited to attend, and taste some great food. The event is free.
