Artist sought to create artwork for proposed City Light facility
Selected artist will develop permanent, site-integrated artwork and opportunities for future artworks for proposed new Denny Substation
SEATTLE — The Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, in partnership with Seattle City Light (SCL), seeks an artist or artist team to develop permanent, site-integrated artwork for SCL's proposed new Denny Substation. The substation will serve electrical power needs in the South Lake Union and Denny Triangle urban areas.
Increasing development, allowable density and customer need prompted SCL to obtain approval to purchase property for a substation in South Lake Union and to start developing detailed plans this year. The new substation will ensure there is adequate electrical capacity and reliability to meet customer needs well into the future. The proposed substation site is between Denny Way, John Street, and Minor and Yale avenues.
The selected artist will work with SCL as a member of the substation's design team to develop the artwork for the facility. The artist will also develop proposals for opportunities for artworks by other artists that can be incorporated in and around the substation in the future. The artist will join the project team in January 2013. The design phase of the project is currently in design development, with construction to be complete in late 2016.
The call is open to professional artists residing in the United States. Applications are due 11 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 (Pacific Daylight Time). Go to http://www.seattle.gov/arts for a link to the online application.
The budget to complete the artwork is $300,000, all-inclusive of travel expenses, taxes and other proposal and project costs. The artist will first receive a design contract for $60,000 to develop artwork and additional art opportunities. If the artwork proposal is accepted, the artist will receive a contract for $240,000 to fabricate and install the artwork. The artwork is funded by Seattle City Light 1% for Art funds and administered by the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

The 16-member Seattle Arts Commission, citizen volunteers appointed by the mayor and City Council, supports the city agency.
