Opening Celebration for Kirke Park Coming up on Saturday, August 11
Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Friends of Kirke Park invite the public to the dedication of Kirke Park on Saturday, August 11, 2012, from 10 a.m. - noon at 7028 9th Avenue NW, Seattle. Come explore the new park and enjoy music by Pasquale Santos with food and family fun. The construction fences came down on July 19, and the park has been an instant hit in the neighborhood as kids scramble over the playground at the south end and P-Patchers have started preparing the gardens at the north end.
Parks purchased the site with funding from the voter-approved 2000 Pro Parks Levy, and development funding was approved by voters in the 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy.
The new park features a play area, an adventure trail, a central commons, and a community garden. The park was named Kirke, which means church in Norwegian. This name pays tribute to both the Norwegian heritage of the neighborhood and the history of the site, which was home to the Church of Seventh Elect in Spiritual Israel for more than 90 years.
