Yesler Community Center Hosts Juneteenth Celebration

Yesler Community Center invites the community to celebrate Juneteenth on June 15, 2012 from 5 to 8 p.m.  The evening will be filled with entertainment, arts, crafts, food from various cultures and more. Yesler Community Center is located at 917 Yesler Way.  The celebration is free and open to all ages and cultures.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the date in 1865 when many slaves in Texas learned they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, with an effective date of January 1, 1863.  Two and a half years later on June 19, 1865 Union General Gordon Granger took possession of the state of Texas and enforced the emancipation of its slaves.

For more information please contact Marc Hoffman at marc.hoffman@seattle.gov or contact the Yesler Community Center at 206-386-1245.
