Migrate to Magnuson Park for 20th International Migratory Bird Day and the Opening of the Shore Ponds
City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw to join the Shore Ponds opening, nature walk
Did you know that migratory birds connect people, cultures and even continents? World Migratory Bird Day began in 2006 as a global campaign to raise awareness of the need to protect migratory birds and their habitats. On the second weekend of each May, people around the world organize public bird festivals, education programs and bird-watching expeditions to celebrate the day.
Come to Magnuson Park, 7400 Sand Point Way NE, on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to celebrate and learn about the amazing birds that travel thousands of miles to return to Seattle each year.
See the opening of the Shore Ponds, enjoy guided bird and habitat walks, and listen to talks about bird migration, habitat restoration, and how important trees in your yard are to our migrating birds. Events are free with one exception.
Finding Urban Nature (FUN) will provide fun kids’ activities, and there will be poster sessions at the Brig all day presented by Bats Northwest, Seattle Audubon, Heron Habitat Helpers, Green Seattle Partnership, EarthCorps, Parks’ nature programs and Parks’ Wildlife Sanctuary Program. If you’re looking for a gift for the nature lover in your life, The Nature Shop and Flora & Fauna Books will be on hand.
The day’s scheduled activities
Parks, The Berger Partnership and Councilmember Sally Bagshaw will celebrate the opening of the Shore Ponds by the boat ramp at 11:30 a.m. The Shore Ponds add to a system of connected wetlands in the park that are home to 29 species of dragonflies – the most diverse population in Seattle!
