Summer Streets 2011 Kicks off in Ballard and Alki this Weekend

SEATTLE — Summer Streets are back and even better in 2011 with the launch this weekend of the first two of four events. Summer Streets open up the city’s largest public space – our streets –
for people to have fun, celebrate the spirit and personality of their community, discover active, healthy transportation and support local businesses.

This Friday Summer Streets carries the momentum of Bike to Work Day into the evening. The city is partnering with Cascade Bicycle Club to transform the heart of Ballard into a bike block party. Enter drawings for great gear like a Raleigh commuter bike, make bike art, test ride a seven passenger conference bike and eMoto electric bicycles, and say “Hi” to KEXP, who will have a station at the event celebrating Ballard for winning their Hood to Hood Challenge.

On Sunday get outside and be a part of a several-thousand-strong community celebration complete with a 5K Run/Walk, tons of kids’ activities, face painting, henna tattoos, skateboarding ramps and competitions, live music, Alki Community Council Animal Attractions, Irish dancers, an Ultimate Frisbee demo, free test rides on eMoto electric bicycles, Brazilian music, a surf machine, children’s photography, pet massages, free stand-up paddleboard demos, Seal Sitters, a kid’s talent show and so much more. Alki Beach is going to be packed with sunny fun and entertainment for Seattleites of all ages.

Get more details and learn about the Rainier Valley and Greenwood August events at www.seattle.gov/transportation/summerstreets.htm. Our special thanks to the sponsors who make these events possible, to include: Xerox, Hansen’s Natural Soda, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Cascade Bicycle Club, the Alki Community Council and also to Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle City Light and the Seattle Police Department for their support.
