Sounders and Saint Patrick’s Day Events Bringing out the Green

SEATTLE –Seattleites will be seeing plenty of green over the next four days, March 11-14. Throngs of Seattle Sounders fans, wearing their green Sounder scarves, will be turning out en mass for a pre-season match between the Sounders and Portland Timbers late Thursday afternoon, at Qwest Field. Friday evening, the Saint Patrick’s Day celebration kicks off with the 2010 Laying of the Green Stripe down Fourth Avenue. The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade marches up Fourth Avenue at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday morning, thousands of runners dressed in green will gather by the Seattle Center for the Henry Weinhard’s Saint Patrick’s Day Dash and Leprechaun Kid’s Run. The Seattle Department of Transportation reminds motorists that they should plan on traffic congestion associated with the events.

Thursday, March 11

Seattle Sounders versus Portland Timbers: 6 - 8:00 p.m.
Qwest Field
15,000 spectators expected
Congestion around the stadium and in the SODO area could delay cars and buses; plan accordingly.


Friday, March 12

2010 Laying of the Green Stripe: 7:00 - 7:30 p.m.
70 participants
Seattle Police will escort the participants as they mark, in biodegradable green paint, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade route with along Fourth Avenue from Jefferson Street to Pike Street.

Saturday, March 13

St. Patrick’s Day Parade : 12:30 –1:30 PM
5,000 attending
The staging area on Fourth Avenue between S Washington and James streets, and on Dilling Way between Fourth Avenue and Yesler Way will be closed from 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Parade route: starts at Fourth Avenue and James Street; heads north on Fourth to Pine Street and Westlake Park.

Seattle Mariner single game tickets on sale: 10:00 a.m.
Safeco Field
Expect congestion in the area around the Safeco Field.

Sunday, March 14

Henry Weinhard’s St. Patrick’s Day Dash : 7:00 a.m. Staging; Event: 8:30 – 11a.m.
14,600 participants:
Staging on Mercer Street between First Avenue N and Fourth Avenue N; race starts in four waves at 8:30 a.m., 8:40 a.m., 8:50 a.m., and 9:00 a.m. Dash route: start at Third Avenue N and Mercer Street; moves east on Mercer to Eighth Avenue; south on Eighth to Republican Street; west on Republican to Aurora Avenue N; north on Aurora to the south end of the Aurora Bridge; makes a u-turn, then goes south on Aurora to the Broad Street off-ramp; west on the off-ramp to Harrison Street; west on Harrison to the finish line on Fifth Avenue N. The Alaskan Way Viaduct and Aurora Avenue will be closed beginning at 7:30 a.m. between the Western Avenue off-ramp and N. 39th Street. all

Leprechaun Kid’s Run: 8:10 a.m.
Run route: starts at Third Avenue N and Mercer; heads east on Mercer to Fifth Avenue N; south on Fifth to Republican Street; west on Republican to Fourth Avenue N; north on Fourth to Mercer Street; west on Mercer to finish at Third Avenue N.
All streets will be reopened by approximately 11:00 a.m.
