Consultant Selected to Review SR 520

SEATTLE – The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and the Seattle City Council have selected the local office of the San Francisco-based firm Nelson\Nygaard as the consultant to review designs of SR 520.

The consultant will work to identify, in part, the following:

  • Options to mitigate impact on neighborhoods surrounding SR 520
  • Potential strategies to reduce traffic congestion points
  • Improved transit connections on the western approach
  • Alternatives to reduce the project’s size and impact
  • Opportunities and challenges of building light rail and bus rapid transit along the corridor

This is a co-managed contract between SDOT and the Seattle City Council, working in collaboration with Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The consultant will provide two sets of technical analysis of preliminary recommendations by mid-April.

SR 520 carries approximately 115,000 vehicles daily. WSDOT plans to replace the existing bridge with a new structure that is better able to withstand earthquakes and windstorms. The new bridge is expected to open in 2014.
