Olive Way Paving to Start Jan 11, and on Virginia Street Jan 19

SEATTLE—SDOT’s paving contractor will begin next week upgrading the pavement on Olive Way and the following week will start on Virginia Street. The project on Olive Way will extend from Third Avenue to Sixth Avenue and from Ninth Avenue to Terry Avenue. The project on Virginia Street will be from First Avenue to Boren Avenue. SDOT and the contractor are working to minimize traffic impacts.

From Monday to Friday, January 11-15, weather permitting, traffic will be reduced to one lane on Olive Way between Third and Fourth avenues 24-hours-a-day to accommodate the construction.  The contractor will close the crosswalk on Olive Way and Stewart Street (the two streets merge) on the western side of Fourth Avenue (by Macy’s) from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The contractor plans to begin work on Virginia Street the week of January 19.

Over the next six to seven months, on both streets the contractor will install concrete pavement in the most heavily traveled bus zones, resurface the asphalt roadway, upgrade curb ramps, and provide new pavement markings including bike sharrows. On Virginia Street the contractor will also install a new electric duct bank to improve power distribution in downtown, and will widen the sidewalk on the south side of Olive Way between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

This project is funded by the “Bridging the Gap” transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in November 2006.

The contractor’s preliminary schedule, if weather allows, is as follows:

Olive Way

  • January - March: Concrete paving, and sidewalk and curb ramps
  • March - April: Roadway grinding, base repair and asphalt overlay.

Virginia Street

  • January - June: Electrical duct bank installation including pavement and sidewalk restoration
  • April - July: Concrete paving, roadway grinding, base repair and asphalt overlay
