City technology chief to head national organization
Schrier elected president of Metropolitan Information Exchange

SEATTLE – Bill Schrier, Seattle’s chief technology officer and director of the Department of Information Technology, has been elected president of the Metropolitan Information Exchange (MIX) for the coming year. MIX is a national organization of chief information officers and key technology executives of city and county governments with populations over 100,000.

Schrier has served as Seattle’s chief technology officer (CTO) since 2003. Prior to being named CTO Schrier served as director of operations for the Department of Information Technology. As CTO, Schrier sets standards and policies governing the use of information technology in City government. His responsibilities include the city’s data center, electronic mail system, public safety radio system, telephone network, data communications network, and award-winning web site and municipal television station. Schrier chairs the King County Regional Communications Board and the Puget Sound Regional Interoperability Executive Committee.

Schrier writes a blog about the intersection of information technology and government, how they sometimes collide but often influence and change each other. It can be found at www.digitalcommunitiesblogs.com/CCIO/. He tweets at www.twitter.com/billschrier.

MIX (http://www.mixnet.org/) members represent more than 55 cities and counties. They share information on new technologies and solutions to local government’s information technology challenges. Of particular interest to MIX members this year are maintaining current technology services in tough budget years, social media in government, and the ARRA broadband stimulus program.

The Department of Information Technology (DoIT) builds and operates technology tools and systems that support the missions of every department in city government. DoIT manages the Seattle Channel and www.seattle.gov, the city’s web site work, to keep Seattleites informed, give them access to services, and allow them to participate in governing.
