Open Houses for Neighborhood Plan Updates
Plan Update drafts available for Othello, North Rainer and North Beacon Hill

Seattle—The City of Seattle is holding two open houses for the community to review and comment on initial drafts of neighborhood plan updates for the MLK @ Holly(Othello), North Beacon Hill and North Rainier communities. The recommendations in the plans incorporate input from dozens of neighborhood meetings, workshops and on-line surveys.

The informal open houses will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2009 from 1pm to 5pm and Wednesday, September 30, from 6pm-8pm.  The open houses allow for each of the three neighborhood-specific draft updates to be presented separately.  Comments and recommendations for each specific neighborhood will be noted.  These meetings are an important opportunity for continuing community review of neighborhood goals and priorities.  There will be additional meetings in the three neighborhoods this fall.

“Each of these three draft neighborhood updates have been shaped by the extraordinary energy and commitment of their community,” noted Planning Director Ray Gastil. “Building on existing neighborhood plans, there is strong support for communities to be greener, livelier, and to offer more choices for living, working, and recreation. These draft updates are a critical tool to further engage the community in shaping how we work together to meet those goals.”

As part of updating neighborhood plans the City has used a number of outreach and engagement strategies—including the innovative approach of connecting with historically under-represented communities by means of Planning Outreach Liaisons (POLs). Under the direction of the Department of Neighborhoods in partnership with the Department of Planning and Development, 13 bicultural and/or bilingual POLs serve as a vital component of the Neighborhood Plan Outreach effort. Of the 1,900 people who have contributed to updates this year, POLs hosted 1,436 participants in a series of 56 workshops throughout southeast Seattle.  In addition to facilitating workshops, Planning Outreach Liaisons brought cultural-relevancy to neighborhood planning while strengthening the bridge between the city of Seattle and its residents.
