Immigrants and Refugees Initiative Seattle has become a multi-cultural city. The percentage of foreign-born residents has increased significantly in the last three decades. In 1980, the foreign-born population constituted about 11 percent of Seattle's population. In 2000, it was almost 17 percent. By 2010, it could be almost 20 percent and total up to 120,000 people. In June 2007, Mayor Greg Nickels announced steps the City is taking to improve services to Seattle's growing immigrant and refugee population. Improved translation and interpretation services, technical assistance for immigrant-owned businesses, increased access to city grants and an advisory board focused on immigrant and refugee issues are just some of the actions included in the Mayor's Immigrants & Refugees Report and Action Plan.
