2011 Families and Education Levy Workshops
Outcomes 101 is now available on video. If you haven't already attended that workshop, you are strongly encouraged to watch the video. It's broken up into 10 modules so that you can watch each module as you have time.
The workshops listed below were offered to school staff, members of the community, community-based organizations, foundations, philanthropists, and city staff who may be interested in responding to Requests for Investments from the 2011 Families and Education Levy, or in collaborating with others who plan to do so. The workshops focused on both the Levy investment framework and processes and on specific investment areas. The intent is to offer many opportunities for collaboration and partnerships in the interest of dramatically improving academic results for students in Seattle public schools. We have much to learn from each other about what works to improve results.
NOTE:
Attendance at these workshops is not required for you to submit a Request for Qualifications as part of the Levy Implementation Process. If you have questions, please call 206-233-5118.

Place-Based Strategies
Inspired by the great success of the Harlem's Children's Zone, many Seattle neighborhood-level place-based projects are now being planned. The proposed Levy offers a great opportunity to accelerate student achievement in high-need neighborhoods and feeder patterns by offering a powerful set of outcome-oriented cradle-to-college interventions. By developing very strong school and community partnerships, aligning programs carefully, and sequencing the work, greater outcomes may be possible for given cohorts of students. The workshop will help teams engaged in planning such efforts think through how they might compete effectively for Levy investments to help them boost student outcomes.
Other related topics will also be covered: data sharing and results-tracking options, suggestions no how to create strong place-based management and project governance structures, etc.
Who Should Attend: Teams involved in exploring the potential of place-based projects, including school leaders and key nonprofit partners. Teams will have time to work together and so should bring any data/planning work they already have completed.

Extended Learning Time and Out-of-School Time
We are thrilled to announce that Jeff Riley, Chief Innovation Officer from Boston Public Schools, will be coming to Seattle to lead a Levy workshop on the topics of Extended Learning Time and Out of School Time. Prior to being appointed Chief Innovation Officer, Jeff served as a teacher, principal and deputy superintendent. Most notably, Jeff led Edwards Middle School in Boston from the bottom of the rankings to being one of the highest performing middle schools in the city, dramatically narrowing the academic achievement. He credits the school’s focus on personalized education, extracurricular activities, and "acceleration academies" as keys to its success. In this workshop you will get to learn more about Jeff’s work and how we might use these ideas to improve outcomes for students in Seattle.
Please note that the Extended Learning Time workshop on September 22 and the Out of School Time workshop on October 5 have been CANCELLED and replaced with this combined workshop on October 4.
Who Should Attend: Community-based organizations that provide quality out-of-school programs that support academic skill building. School teams that expect to request Levy investments to implement quality OST programs.
School teams that expect to request Levy investments to adopt innovative approaches for addressing student academic needs through extended learning time. Community-based organizations that hope to partner with schools should also attend.

We are fortunate to be able to highlight two summer programs that are contributing to improved academic outcomes for students. These programs include:
1. Summer Advantage USA (www.summeradvantage.org)

"Aim High is the largest academic summer program provider in the Bay Area, operating campuses in San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County and San Mateo County. The program combines intensive, engaging and challenging academic classes with activities and events that create opportunities for leadership development and community exploration. Students join after 5th or 6th grade, and participate for three or four consecutive summers - at no cost to them or their families. The organization has grown from one site, serving 50 students in 1986, to twelve sites in four counties serving more than 1,000 students in 2010."
