Mayor Greg Nickels kicks off a new project to convert an existing 3.73 acre park and ride facility to a new urban park. The Hubbard Homestead park in North Seattle will provide open space to serve existing and future residential development in the area. It will provide amenities for low, medium and high intensity uses creating spaces and amenities for contemplation and recreation. The new park will be connected to and integrated into the overall fabric of the community.

Mayor Greg Nickels, along City Councilmember Jean Godden, Fire Chief Gregory Dean, Fleets and Facilities Director Brenda Bauer, firefighters assigned to Engine 38 and members of the community today broke ground for the new Fire Station 38 in the Hawthorne Hills neighborhood. The current facility, built in 1930, is the smallest among Seattle's 33 neighborhood fire stations.

The realization of a 20-year dream of community ownership of the University Heights school was celebrated today. On July 31 of this year, University Heights Community Center purchased the building for continued use as a community center, and Parks purchased a portion of the site for an urban park, from the Seattle School District. This acquisition creates greater stability for the Farmer's Market since the land is now in community and public ownership.

The ground breaking of a new Seattle Housing Authority project Monday was attended by U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. Construction of Tamarack Place marks the end of delays to work on the section of Rainier Vista east of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where the housing authority demolished existing homes three years ago. The housing authority is spending more than $7 million of federal stimulus funding on Tamarack Place and another $6.5 million on infrastructure for future development north of the building. Rainier Vista construction projects will employ 350 people, according to Housing Authority estimates.

The games will be available at community events as well as schools.

Mayor Greg Nickels and National Trust for Historic Preservation President Richard Moe announced a new private-sector effort to rehabilitate historic buildings with energy-efficient technology. The National Trust for Historic Preservation created the new Preservation Green Lab, which is partially funded by a $50,000 grant from the city of Seattle over two years. The first of its kind in the nation, the lab partners with selected cities and states to suggest innovative sustainable development policies for existing buildings and neighborhoods. In addition, the lab will serve as a national clearinghouse for best practices for green rehabilitation.

As Seattle prepares for another storm season, Mayor Greg Nickels is inviting residents to join the city's adopt-a-drain program. City crews recently inspected 78,000 storm drains around Seattle that provide critical infrastructure to keep Seattle's neighborhoods from flooding. Crews cleaned the one-third of the drains that required cleaning, and with the adopt-a-drain program, the public can help keep the drains clear during winter storms.

Mayor Greg Nickels announces a new initiative geared to decrease youth violence. More than $9 million from the 2009-2010 proposed budget will go towards the new initiative. Approximately 800 children a year are at high risk of perpetuating violence or becoming victims. The Mayor's plan includes establishing youth centers with extended hours, giving children a safe place to go to stay out of trouble. It also proposes a new approach to street outreach with the use of violence interrupters.

Mayor Greg Nickels delivers the Seattle Fire Department’s new 50-foot fire rescue boat “Engine 1” to its home on the Elliott Bay waterfront. The state-of-the-art fireboat will allow firefighters to maneuver more quickly in confined spaces such as piers and marinas. The boat can pump 6,000 gallons of water a minute and travel at 30.5 knots an hour. The new fire rescue boat is the first of its kind outside of the military that provides protection to the fireboat crew in the event of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) attack.

Mayor Greg Nickels, Councilman David Della and Seattle School Superintendent Raj Manhas announce a new program to help struggling students meet high school graduation requirements while exposing them to the opportunities of a college education. Summer College will provide help to about 600 high school students who do not pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) this year. The five-week program, made possible by an innovative new partnership between Seattle Public Schools, Seattle Community Colleges and the City of Seattle, will be located on three community college campuses - North, Central and South Seattle - to quickly boost student achievement and give students an experience of college life.
