Mayor's Press Conference: Hubbard Homestead 9/26/2009 Mayor Greg Nickels kicks off a new project to convert an existing 3.73 acre park and ride facility to a new urban park. The Hubbard Homestead park in North Seattle will provide open space to serve existing and future residential development in the area. It will provide amenities for low, medium and high intensity uses creating spaces and amenities for contemplation and recreation. The new park will be connected to and integrated into the overall fabric of the community. |

Mayor's Press Conference: University Heights 8/19/2009 The realization of a 20-year dream of community ownership of the University Heights school was celebrated today. On July 31 of this year, University Heights Community Center purchased the building for continued use as a community center, and Parks purchased a portion of the site for an urban park, from the Seattle School District. This acquisition creates greater stability for the Farmer's Market since the land is now in community and public ownership. |

Mayor's Press Conference: Rainier Vista Groundbreaking 8/10/2009 The ground breaking of a new Seattle Housing Authority project Monday was attended by U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. Construction of Tamarack Place marks the end of delays to work on the section of Rainier Vista east of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, where the housing authority demolished existing homes three years ago. The housing authority is spending more than $7 million of federal stimulus funding on Tamarack Place and another $6.5 million on infrastructure for future development north of the building. Rainier Vista construction projects will employ 350 people, according to Housing Authority estimates. |

The officers will focus on crisis intervention, guidance, and mentoring. They will wear “soft” uniforms - knit shirts with the Seattle Police Department logo - and serve at Aki Kurose, Madrona K-8, and Denny. One officer will split time between Meany and Washington. |

Mayor's Press Conference: Preservation Green Lab 4/2/2009 Mayor Greg Nickels and National Trust for Historic Preservation President Richard Moe announced a new private-sector effort to rehabilitate historic buildings with energy-efficient technology. The National Trust for Historic Preservation created the new Preservation Green Lab, which is partially funded by a $50,000 grant from the city of Seattle over two years. The first of its kind in the nation, the lab partners with selected cities and states to suggest innovative sustainable development policies for existing buildings and neighborhoods. In addition, the lab will serve as a national clearinghouse for best practices for green rehabilitation. |

Mayor's Press Conference: Decreasing Youth Violence 9/10/2008 Mayor Greg Nickels announces a new initiative geared to decrease youth violence. More than $9 million from the 2009-2010 proposed budget will go towards the new initiative. Approximately 800 children a year are at high risk of perpetuating violence or becoming victims. The Mayor's plan includes establishing youth centers with extended hours, giving children a safe place to go to stay out of trouble. It also proposes a new approach to street outreach with the use of violence interrupters.

Mayor's Press Conference: Fire Rescue Boat Launch 7/15/2006 Mayor Greg Nickels delivers the Seattle Fire Department’s new 50-foot fire rescue boat “Engine 1” to its home on the Elliott Bay waterfront. The state-of-the-art fireboat will allow firefighters to maneuver more quickly in confined spaces such as piers and marinas. The boat can pump 6,000 gallons of water a minute and travel at 30.5 knots an hour. The new fire rescue boat is the first of its kind outside of the military that provides protection to the fireboat crew in the event of a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) attack. |
