Mayor calls on city, residents to prepare for extended heat wave
Nickels urges community to check on neighbors
SEATTLE - With an extended record heat wave predicted this week, Mayor Greg Nickels today urged residents to check on each other and he called together his department heads and Emergency Executive Board to discuss steps the city can take to help protect the public.
"If you have elderly neighbors, it's especially important now to check on them to make sure they are all right or help them find relief from the heat," said Nickels.
The city is mobilizing to respond to the heat wave. Case managers in the Human Services Department will begin calling senior citizen clients to check on their welfare. City workers, including police officers, are determining ways to keep the homeless hydrated. Seattle City Light is monitoring electrical demand. Although the utility has reached peak demand for July, the city still has adequate supplies.
