City invests in urban agriculture projects in 2013
Mayor McGinn will announce an additional $427,000 given for community garden development from the 2008 Parks and Green Space Levy. As a result of low inflation, funds reserved for that purpose have been reallocated to support a combination of new garden opportunities and needed improvements to existing gardens. These projects will add approximately 115 new community garden plots, plus 14,500 square feet of urban agriculture gardening space.

Media Guide for wedding ceremonies at City Hall on Dec. 9, 2012
On Dec. 9, 2012, after the required three-day waiting period for those couples receiving marriage licenses on Dec. 6, 2012, 140 couples who have RSVP’d in advance will hold their wedding ceremonies in the Grand Lobby of Seattle’s City Hall. Online reservations opened at 9 a.m. on Nov. 27 and all reservations were filled by Nov. 29.

Seattle moves forward with replacing the seawall
Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) Director Peter Hahn have updated the public and press on the city’s progress in replacing the aging Elliott Bay Seawall. In just the past month, the city achieved 60 percent design on the project, released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement, selected a general contractor to build it, and secured Seattle voters’ approval of $240 million to complete its funding package.

Spokane Street Viaduct Ribbon Cutting Event
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is widening and improving the South Spokane Street Viaduct – the 60-year old elevated roadway that carries 65,000-70,000 vehicles daily between I-5 and the West Seattle Bridge. SDOT conceptually designed the South Spokane Street Viaduct Widening Project in 1995 and has been implementing it in phases due to funding availability.

Coal trains would significantly increase delays at railroad crossings
An increase in coal trains running through Seattle would increase delays at railroad crossings by between one and three hours per day by 2026, according to a Parametrix study commissioned by the Seattle Department of Transportation. These delays could increase police and fire response times for emergencies in the affected areas, particularly in SODO.

Seattle secures funding to design First Hill Streetcar Line’s Broadway Extension
Mayor Mike McGinn has announced that the City of Seattle has secured funding to plan and design the First Hill Streetcar line’s Broadway Extension. With $850,000 in federal funds secured and another $900,000 pending final approval, the City will have sufficient funds to fully design a half mile line extension sought by the Capitol Hill community. The project would extend the line into Broadway’s retail core and better support its residents by moving the terminus from Denny Way to Roy Street or beyond.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This year, the King County Department of Community and Human Services, the King County Women's Advisory Board, the King County Prosecutor' Office, the Seattle City Attorney's Office, Seattle Human Services Department and the Seattle Women’s Commission are co-hosting a ceremony to honor the work of law enforcement officers for their excellent work toward ending domestic violence.

Pay for Performance Energy Efficiency
Seattle City Light will issue an RFP in early November seeking three downtown office buildings to participate in a pilot project using pay-for-performance energy efficiency. Rather than providing financial incentives up front for specific energy efficiency upgrades defined by the utility, participants will be able to craft their own energy efficiency plan and receive financial incentives over time based on the energy savings they produce.

Mayor Mike McGinn, State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Seattle Police Department Assistant Chief Jim Pugel today responded to this week’s announcement on the ownership of the Seattle Weekly and Backpage.com.
"We appreciate the decision by the Seattle Weekly to disassociate from Backpage.com," said McGinn. "But the fact remains that Backpage.com continues to be an accelerant of the sexual exploitation of children. I remain committed to working with state leaders and mayors across the country to stop Backpage.com's abhorrent profit-driven practices."

Mayor announces new investments in safety near schools
Following September’s announcement of Be Super Safe, a Road Safety Action Plan for Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn today announced $800,000 in new funding for Safe Routes to School projects at Beacon Hill, McGilvra, and West Woodland elementary schools. The funding comes from the City’s Real Estate Excise Tax and is included in the mayor’s proposed 2013-2014 budget.

Mayor McGinn announces $1.24 million settlement with garbage hauler
Mayor Mike McGinn has announced a $1.24 million settlement with Waste Management over missed garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections due to last month's eight-day strike by Teamsters Union drivers.
The mayor said the settlement money will be shared by households and businesses impacted by the strike.

Mayor Mike McGinn's 2013-14 Proposed Budget prioritizes new funding support for public safety, and expands transit options and youth and family services in Seattle. The total proposed budget is $4 billion, including the city's

Mayor announces new funding for community centers and youth violence prevention
Mayor Mike McGinn today announced new investments to support at-risk youth in Seattle. The funding will allow 450 more youth to participate in the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative. The mayor's budget will also add after school and late night hours at seven different community centers, selected due to their ability to improve public safety by providing at-risk youth with additional safe outlets outside of school hours. The community centers were selected through a data-drive analysis of existing services and needs. Five of the selected community centers are already connected to existing Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative activities. The Ballard and Northgate Community Centers' hours will expand to allow access to more late night recreational programs to teens in the north and northwest sectors of the City.

Mayor announces new funding for child care and homeless families
Mayor McGinn has announced new investments in human services as part of his 2013-14 Proposed Budget, including an expansion of a City program providing child care to low- and moderate-income families and increased assistance to homeless families with children. McGinn's budget also includes an increase in funding for human services providers to cover the costs of inflation.

Mayor announces funding for new police officers, purchase of gunshot locators
Mayor McGinn today announced new investments in public safety as part of his 2013-14 Proposed Budget, including the hiring of 10 new police officers and the purchase of a gunshot locator system. McGinn’s budget also includes funding to invest in new in-car police video equipment and in data analysis. It also includes a reserve to implement the 20/20 plan and the Settlement Agreements with the Department of Justice.

City partners with Seattle Public Schools to offer meeting space in school libraries
Today Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda announced a new partnership called "Evening Community Meetings in School Libraries" to open every school library in Seattle for use by community and neighborhood groups. Groups will be able to sign up online for a fee of only $15 to hold meetings in school libraries after school hours.

City announces investments in Seattle cultural facilities
This new pilot program supports Seattle-based arts, heritage, cultural and arts service organizations with urgent-need, facilities-based capital projects, including facility renovations or completing the final phase of new facilities. A total of $150,000 will be distributed to 14 organizations to support projects such as adding an ADA access entryway, roof and furnace replacements, HVAC and wiring updates, and exterior security lighting.

Scheduled partial shutdown of city Data Center over Labor Day weekend
Mayor Mike McGinn, Finance and Administrative Services Director Fred Podesta and city staff detail city services that will be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance of the power source for the city's Data Center over the Labor Day weekend. Partial shutdown of the City of Seattle's Data Center will impact the City's noncritical information technology systems. Critical public safety systems, such as "911" and emergency dispatching, will NOT be impacted by this partial shutdown.

Low-income Residents Get a Healthy Boost through City of Seattle "Fresh Bucks" Program
The City of Seattle Office of Sustainability & Environment is strengthening equal access to local and healthy foods with the Fresh Bucks pilot program. The program, a partnership with the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance (NFMA), will double the value of purchases made with SNAP electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards at select Farmers Markets.

Regulatory Reforms adopted for Seattle
Mayor Mike McGinn has signed legislation to reform development regulations in Seattle. The changes, adopted by Seattle City Council on July 23, are intended to support jobs in the city, with many of the changes applying to areas of the city where most growth is expected, including most major urban centers and areas along light rail.

Mayor outlines City response to disruption in waste pickup
Mayor Mike McGinn announced that city inspectors will begin assessing possible fines to be imposed on Waste Management for non-collection of garbage, recycling, and food and yard waste, with funds to be returned to the public in the form of bill adjustments. The fines could reach as high as $1.25 million per day.
"This service disruption is creating a hardship for residents and businesses, and we expect Waste Management to fulfill their contract," McGinn said. "We will be looking for every missed collection by Waste Management and with the public’s help we will hold them accountable. I urge both sides to return to the table to reach a mutually acceptable solution."

Mayor McGinn and Councilmember Licata present proposal to protect residents from unfair towing fees
Mayor Mike McGinn and Councilmember Nick Licata are announcing plans to cap fees for involuntary tows from private property. The proposed legislation, which goes to the City Council the next day, protects consumers while balancing tow companies’ business interests and private property owners ability to seek relief from unauthorized parking. Standard impounds will be capped at $156.75, and storage rates are limited to $15.50 for up to 12 hours. Sales tax and an impound fee, yet to be determined, will also be applied.

Three New Neighborhoods, Only in Seattle Sunday Discount Days
In a continued effort to encourage discovery and exploration of new neighborhoods and businesses in Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn announced both the addition of three new neighborhoods to be featured in the 2012 Only in Seattle Campaign, and the launch of Only in Seattle Sundays - a special once-a-month neighborhood discount day.
Now in the campaign’s third year, the City is not only adding 12 new businesses in Fremont, Pioneer Square, and Wallingford, but also taking the campaign one step further by introducing Only in Seattle Sundays.
