Mayor McGinn Announces New Late-Night Taxi Stands
Following through on his plan for creating a safe and vibrant nightlife in Seattle, Mayor Mike McGinn announced the installation of five new late night taxi stands today. To help ensure that everyone arrives home safely, the stands provide a safe and visible sidewalk location for people to grab taxis in the city's entertainment hubs and operate nightly from 10PM to 6AM.

KEXP and Seattle Center Sign KEXP Lease
Mayor McGinn today announced the signing of a ground-breaking lease agreement between KEXP 90.3 FM Seattle and Seattle Center that provides a home on the Seattle Center campus for the public radio station for many years to come. The agreement, which makes available the Northwest Rooms and adjacent courtyard to KEXP in exchange for rent and in-kind services, brings key elements to Seattle's civic living room: radio broadcasts and performances from the KEXP studios of music that matters to the greater community and beyond.

Mayor Mike McGinn and Former Governor Gary Locke Announce Support for Obama's 100,000 Strong Initiative
Mayor Mike McGinn, Superintendent of Seattle Public Schools Dr. Susan Enfield, and U.S. Ambassador to China and former Washington State Governor Gary Locke today announced their support for Seattle to be a partner city in President Obama's 100,000 Strong Initiative to diversify and dramatically increase the number of American students studying abroad in China. Seattle joins other major U.S. cities selected by the U.S. State Department to lead this initiative because of its important role in U.S.-China relations.

Mayor and UW president announce high-speed fiber broadband partnership
Mayor Mike McGinn and University of Washington President Michael Young today announced a partnership to solicit private proposals to provide high-speed fiber service to communities surrounding the UW campus. For the first time, Seattle will offer to lease access to its unused "dark fiber" to allow private companies to build broadband networks with speeds up to 100 times faster than is currently available.

City awards $27 million to construct affordable permanent housing
Mayor Mike McGinn today announced more than $27 million in capital funding for the construction of seven new apartment buildings that will serve homeless individuals, low-income families and seniors. The investment, primarily Seattle Housing Levy funds, will help create 476 new permanent apartments, including some set-aside to serve veterans.

The City is preparing for another La Nina winter
With winter storm plans readied, salt stockpiled and equipment prepped, Mayor Mike McGinn today announced the City of Seattle is preparing for another season of La Nina winter weather.
“If tested by colder temperatures and more precipitation, we are ready to respond and keep arterial streets clear,” said McGinn. “Across City departments and in coordination with other agencies, we have completed our winter response preparations and stand ready to act.”

Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting of Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail on Beacon Hill
Event to celebrate completion of the section of trail from where the existing Mountains-to-Sound Trail ends, at the Jose Rizal Bridge, west along the south side of I-90 and south along I-5 to the Holgate Bridge. This one mile section connects the existing signed bicycle route to Beacon Avenue South, allowing travel on a regional trail system further into SODO.

Mayor McGinn announces that First Hill Streetcar vehicles will be built in Seattle
Mayor Mike McGinn and Council President Richard Conlin, joined by labor and business representatives, today announced Inekon-Pacifica as the winning bidder to build six First Hill Streetcar vehicles. Inekon, based in the Czech Republic, is partnered with Pacifica, a Seattle-based manufacturer.

300 jobs - Brooks Sports and Skanska bring 300 new jobs to Seattle
Today we welcomed Brooks Sports, Inc as they announced that they would be moving their corporate offices to 3400 Stone Way. The move will bring 300 new jobs to Seattle and provide a new influx of shoppers and diners to local businesses in Fremont and Wallingford.

Tech firm EMC Isilon announced yesterday that they would be establishing new offices in Pioneer Square and adding 200 new jobs to their growing enterprise. All of the office space at 505 First Avenue South will be filled with 200 new employees over the next fifteen months.

New Technology to Help Keep Traffic Moving during Alaskan Way Viaduct Work
With the nine-day closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct only four days away, the City of Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), King County Metro Transit and the Port of Seattle are urging drivers and transit users to plan ahead to avoid significant traffic disruptions. Highlighting the technology being used to monitor and aggressively manage traffic during the work, the partner agencies encourage travelers to take advantage of new systems that can help make trips easier.

LEAD program will help make neighborhoods safer
Today we announced that an innovative new pilot program is now operating in Belltown. Instead of arresting low-level drug offenders and prosecuting them, law enforcement will divert them to community-based treatment and support services.

Mayor McGinn's Proposed 2012 Budget Preserves Direct Services
Mayor Mike McGinn today presented his proposed 2012 budget, which preserves direct services, transforms how the city does business and invests in infrastructure and the future. The mayor's proposed budget is grounded on the principles of shared prosperity, race and social justice, effective and open government, and public safety and health. The total proposed budget is $4.2 billion, including the city's $910 million General Fund.

Paid sick leave signed into law
Today Mayor McGinn signed Seattle's new paid sick leave ordinance into law at Capitol Hill's Plum Bistro. Plum Bistro's owner Makini Howell was one of the first Seattle business owners to get involved in advocating for this legislation.

Mayor's budget to invest in City assets and facilities
Mayor Mike McGinn today stood at Magnuson Park's Building 30 with his acting deputy Parks superintendent and community stakeholders to announce that his upcoming 2012 Proposed Budget will allocate a number of revenue sources to invest in the maintenance, preservation and improvement of City-owned facilities like community centers and streets. These types of investments have suffered in recent years as a result of the Great Recession and weak Real Estate Excise Tax revenue collections.

Mayor promotes free and reduced-fee preschool programs

Mayor Mike McGinn signs mobile food vending legislation into law
Mike McGinn signed into law an ordinance to create jobs and improve neighborhood vitality by allowing more mobile food vending in Seattle. The ordinance, developed in consultation with vendors, restaurants, and neighbors, was approved by an 8-0 vote of the City Council on Monday. The mayor held a signing ceremony at Lake Union Park as part of the Seattle Parks Foundation's Mobile Food Chowdown.

Mayor Mike McGinn introduces addition of electric vehicles to city fleet
Mayor Mike McGinn introduced the latest additions to the city of Seattle's fleet - five Nissan Leaf electric vehicles. When Mayor McGinn launched his Seattle Jobs Plan in 2010, his two goals were to create a sustainable economy and share prosperity for all. By the end of 2012, a total of 35 Nissan Leafs will be added to the city fleet. The addition of the Leafs and installation of charging infrastructure around the city illustrates progress on both the sustainability and job creation aspects of the plan.

Community Solar Project makes Renewable Energy Available to All
Seattle City Light customers can now purchase solar energy even if they can't install solar panels on their homes, Mayor Mike McGinn announced today.
City Light and Seattle Parks and Recreation are working together to install solar panels at Jefferson Park in Beacon Hill. The Community Solar project will allow up to 500 people to buy portions of the array's electrical output through June 2020 for $600 per portion.

City officials mark enactment of wage theft ordinance
In April, the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to make wage theft, the intentional failure to pay an employee for work, a criminal offense. The legislation was signed by the Mayor in early May and became effective on June 7th 2011.

Mayor Mike McGinn, Police Chief John Diaz, Assistant Chief Mike Sanford and Southwest Precinct Advisory Council Chair Pete Spalding announced the return of the Citywide Late Night Public Safety Emphasis. The emphasis calls for the redeployment of on-duty Seattle Police officers throughout the city to promote uniformed police visibility in areas with high concentrations of people enjoying Friday and Saturday nightlife opportunities

Mayor announces new redevelopment coming to Capitol Hill
Mayor Mike McGinn today announced an agreement between the City and Capitol Hill Housing (CHH) to make the Seattle Police Department's East Precinct parking lot available for redevelopment into a mixed-use, transit-oriented development to include affordable housing, retail, arts and community space.
