4th of July
06/30/06
Dear Friends:
As we celebrate our 230th birthday as a nation, I want to
take a moment to reflect on the sacred responsibilities and privileges we
enjoy as Americans. This 4th of July I have the honor of swearing in 500 new
Americans from over 70 countries. These new citizens have chosen America not
only as their home but also as their country. And they have chosen to live
in our wonderful city, Seattle.
Many of us are the children of immigrants. We came to this country and to
this city for the same reasons: to find new opportunities and to make a better
life for our families. Watching these new citizens take the oath of citizenship
reminds us not to take for granted our unalienable rights: life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness.
I hope you will join me in welcoming our newest citizens from noon to 1 p.m.
at the Seattle Center on the 4th of July. We welcome not only the people themselves,
but the many contributions they bring. They add to the rich diversity of our
city and this 4th of July they can celebrate independence truly for the first
time.
As you celebrate the 4th, I hope you have a safe and happy holiday with your
friends and family.
Best wishes.
Sincerely,
GREG NICKELS
Mayor
