Mayor Announces Day of Giving for Tsunami Relief
01/14/05
Dear Friends:

Our support for people of these nations cannot end. Relief efforts are ongoing, and reconstruction has only just begun.
On Tuesday, I will be asking the City Council to join me in a joint resolution declaring January 21st a “Day of Giving for Tsunami Relief.” Giving stations will be set up throughout the city, so that city employees and the public may give conveniently. Funds collected at these sites will be divided among Mercy Corps, NW Medical Teams and UNICEF. Mercy Corps and NW Medical Teams are local charities and UNICEF was chosen because of its important area of focus. All three are non-profit organizations, and we ask that you give cash or a check; if you prefer to use your credit card, please visit the organizations’ individual websites.
We have asked each department head to appoint a contact person to recruit volunteers to staff giving stations, so you should be hearing directly from them about volunteer opportunities.
I know that many of you have already given to the relief efforts; I encourage you to give a little more to help these nations build a future for themselves. If we all do a little, we can do so much.
Thank you,
GREG NICKELS
Mayor
