“The Rainier Valley is being transformed. Things we thought to be impossible have become possible.”
- Mayor Greg Nickels

The Rainier Valley is undergoing a long-awaited revitalization. Sound Transit’s light rail line will reconnect the city to this vibrant and diverse community, and, in the process, transform a 1950s-era highway into a thriving urban boulevard. The Seattle Housing Authority’s NewHolly and Rainier Vista projects will add thousands of new, affordable homes. The City is spending millions of dollars to foster jobs, education, art, open space and opportunity.

But too often in the past, the development that has followed such investments has meant displacement for the people who have worked hardest to revitalize their community.

That’s why I worked with neighborhood leaders and community organizations to develop an “Action Agenda” that will guide the changes taking place so the benefits of these important investments flow to the people who call Southeast Seattle home today.

Now it is time to act.

With the help of the community, the City Council and everyone who values the Rainier Valley’s unique character, we are going to make the most of this opportunity in ways big and small:

  • Creating the $50 million Rainier Valley Community Development for projects that benefit existing residents and businesses;
  • Spending $35 million from the Families & Education Levy to support child care, early education and other programs;
  • Building 475 affordable homes through the Housing Levy and other city programs;
  • Laying the first 3.6 miles of the Chief Sealth Trail;
  • Spending $3.9 million to expand the Van Asselt Community Center by 6,000 square feet.

And that is just a start.

The Action Agenda focuses on five key areas. Click on each one to learn more about what the city is doing.

"The idea is to build and rebuild the community so when a tide [of private investment] comes in all boats will rise." -- City Councilmember Richard McIver
