When he began as Mayor, Greg Nickels guaranteed the city would fill any pothole called in to the city’s hotline, 386-1218, promising, "We’ll drill ‘em and fill 'em within 48 hours." Two years later, residents are still having their requests filled within two business days.
Any time is the right time to call in your request. Potholes are created when rain water penetrates the asphalt of pavement that has been weakened from everyday wear and tear. Once inside, if the water freezes and then thaws, the asphalt is weakened. If this pattern is repeated a few times, a pothole results.
Upon receiving a report, the Seattle Department of Transportation "Pothole Rangers" investigate every pothole. Those that can be fixed on-the-spot are repaired. Street conditions that need more comprehensive repair are made safe and referred for permanent repair. While the Pothole Rangers are out fixing reported potholes, they often fill other nearby cracks and crevices to maximize resources.

Pothole Kudos
"OK, so I said "Yeah, right" when I heard about the 48-hour pothole fix. But
I called anyway...the person who answered the call was very nice, but I've heard that before.
The street was fixed that afternoon.
I'm impressed.
Here's to you and the Pothole Brigade!"
Jann, Seattle
"This is to thank you for your Pothole program.

Scenes from a Pothole
Making the "cut": jackhammering and sweeping all the street crud out of the pothole.
The glue that holds it all together: this sticky stuff adheses the pothole surface to the new asphalt. Yum!
Passing the torch: we have to cook the glue to make it stickier.
Rake it up, whack it down: spreading up the newly poured asphalt (foreground) and pounding it down level with the surface (background).
