Quick Jump:

Build a Streetcar

Streetcars can spark transformation in neighborhoods. The Portland streetcar helped lead to $1 billion in investment along a line in the Pearl District. A new streetcar line opened in Tacoma August, 2003 and is already providing significant benefits to the city. Streetcars can be built quickly, operate in mixed traffic, and are clean and quiet.

The Mayor's Strategy:
  • Develop a streetcar to connect jobs and housing, the new South Lake Union Park, Denny Triangle, and downtown Seattle
  • Provide easy links to other transit systems at Westlake Center (Light Rail, Monorail, Buses).
  • Develop a funding package that combines Local Improvement District dollars and public funding
