“Gun violence is not limited to big cities. It is an issue plaguing communities large and small throughout the state. We have had far too many incidents of gun violence with tragic results. Separately we cannot solve this problem. But when we work together toward a common-sense solution, we can make a difference.”
--Mayor Greg Nickels
On Dec. 3, 2007, the City of Seattle and the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, with funding from the Joyce Foundation, organized a historic one-day summit focused on reducing gun violence in Washington State. The summit drew more than 160 participants from around the state, including police, prosecutors, school officials, and representatives from the faith community, as well as local and state government. Participants discussed gun violence risk factors, effective interventions and areas in need of additional study and research. At the close of the summit, participants agreed to form a coalition to reduce gun violence in Washington State.
