Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: West Lake Union
Date of Cleanup: November 18, 2006
On Saturday, November 18,
2006 , Mayor Greg Nickels led more than one-hundred volunteers as they cleaned
the area. Participants from the Floating Homes Association, Seattle Pacific
University , Franklin High School, King County Juveniles’ program,
BEAN, and local businesses raked, collected and removed dead leaves along
Westlake Ave from South Lake Union Park to just south of the Fremont
Bridge. Volunteers also swept and picked up litter.
Seattle Parks and Recreation Chief of Staff B.J. Brooks,
on behalf of Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent Ken Bounds, presented
Mayor Nickels with a Clean & Green Seattle work jacket in recognition
of his leadership and work in bringing Seattle citizens together to improve
our city.
The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle
Parks and Recreation, the Department of Corrections, Seattle City Light and
Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort.
Cleanup Activities:

Repaired 13 streetlights
- Swept 1 curb mile
- Cleaned 7 blocks of landscaped area
- Picking up approx. 6 tons of leaves
- Stenciled 12 storm drains
- DAJD picked up more than 200 lbs of litter
- DOC collected and disposed of 2370 pounds green debris and 390
pounds of litter
Emergency preparedness information was available for
the first time at the November 18 Clean and Green Seattle event. Two homeowner
association presidents representing a total of 600 homes scheduled meetings in
2007 to help their residents get prepared. Staff from the Office of Emergency
Management look forward to participating in future Clean and Green Seattle
events in 2007!
