Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: University District

Date of Cleanup:  February 12, 2005

Departments:  Seattle Parks and Recreation, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division

On Saturday, February 12th, Neighbor Appreciation Day, the Mayor, Sharon Nickels and more than 70 residents, business owners, students and community volunteers joined forces to clean up the University District and its business corridor. Christine Stoffels, executive director, University Family YMCA; Teresa Lord Hugel, executive director, Greater University Chamber of Commerce; and Rick Eberhardt, Partnership for Homeless Youth worked with honor students from the University of Washington together to plant flowers along ‘The Ave" and pick up litter throughout the neighborhood.

Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle City Light, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Department of Correction work crews, Seattle Works, King County Department of Adult Juvenile Detention (DAJD) and SPU Community Services Division were also a part of the effort.

The Mayor and Mrs. Nickels also visited a number of University District neighborhood businesses to express appreciation of their participation in the "Friends of the Giving Meter Merchants" program. Those businesses included:

  • Schultzy’s
  • La Tienda
  • University Bookstore
  • Bulldog News
Refreshments were provided in part by Starbucks.

Cleanup Activities:

  • 3 traffic signs replaced
  • 12 curb miles swept
  • 28 street lights were repaired
  • Cleaned 3.4 miles of city streets
  • pickup about 40 bags of litter
  • painted out 140 graffiti tags
  • removed 243 graffiti tags
  • 39 tree pits planted
  • 27 signs & control boxes cleaned
