Cleanup: Seattle Works

On Saturday, May 20, 2006, Mayor Greg Nickels, in Partnership with Seattle Works, lead more eleven hundred volunteers as they cleaned more than fifty-five sites throughout Seattle. Seattle Department of Transportation organized a work party of more sixty Microscoft and Vulcan staff to spread mulch along Westlake Ave.

The mayor created the Clean & Green program shortly after taking office in 2002. The Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle City Light, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Transportation, Seattle Police Department, the Department of Corrections (clearing blackberry bushes), King County Juvenile work teams and Seattle Public Utilities also assisted in the effort.

Seattle Works promotes great partnership between the city and community. Last year the City of Seattle recognized Seattle Works by giving the dynamic organization its Parks & Recreation Denny Award.

Also with volunteers from Seattle works and volunteers from the community we were able to prep for mulch the planting area around parking from one end of West Lake Union project to the other. This comprised about 25 blocks of 5' of planting strip and inner planters estimated at 2 acres. We were successful at mulching 12 blocks of the planting strip using 70 yards of bark. 20 bags of litter (1,200lbs) was picked up, and 4 yards of debris was hauled away.

Volunteers were estimated at 40-45 for the Westlake Project. 9 people assisted Paul Mikolajczak in West Seattle.

• Approximately 17,000 lbs of litter and debris collected
