Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup: Hillman City

Date of Cleanup: April 15, 2006

Departments:  Seattle Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Fire Station 28, Seattle City Light, Department of Correction work crews and Seattle Public Utilities Community Services Division.

On Saturday, April 15, 2006, Mayor Greg Nickels led more than 70 volunteers in the cleaning and greening of Hillman City, the oldest neighborhood in the Rainier Valley. The kick off was held at VelDyke Realty at S. Lucile and Rainier. Volunteers pulled weeds and barked the tree pits on the East and West side of Rainier as well as picked up litter and debris. Volunteers also weeded five traffic circles in the neighborhood. More than 1,728 lbs of litter and debris were collected.

Hillman City Business Association Coordinators Jean VelDyke and Boyd Pickrell, the Hillman City Business Association, the Hillman City Neighborhood Alliance and the Seattle Neighborhood Group co-hosted the event. State Representative Eric Petigrew of the 37th Legislative District also participated.

Cleanup Activities:

  • Repaired 90 streetlights
  • 1 ton asphalt used to repair potholes
  • Crews replaced 26 signs.
  • Swept 16 curb miles.
  • Collected 96 bags of litter.
  • Pulled weeds in 161 locations.
