Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: Othello Park and Surrounding Neighborhoods
Date of Cleanup: March 6, 2002
Target Area: M.L. King Jr Way Street to Rainier Avenue South between South Kenyon Street to S. Holly Street
Departments: Parks, DON, Seattle Transportation, City Light, SPU, DCLU, Arts Commission
Cleanup Activities:
- Collected 73 bags of litter and removed litter and trash (1,100 pounds) from 7.9 miles of streets
- Cleaned one illegal dump site, removing 2,000 pounds of debris and cleaning another two acres of public open space
- Installed 155 cubic yards of wood chips for children's play area (removed 100 cubic yards of older material)
- Repainted existing comfort station with more than 4,000 square feet of paint and removed 300 square feet of graffiti on park benches and other equipment
- Removed over 135 graffiti tags and stickers from city signs, poles and traffic control boxes in the greater Othello Park neighborhood
- Planted 342 flowers and two trees as part of beautification effort in the park
- Swept more than 14 curb miles of residential streets, removing 12 cubic yards of debris from these streets
- Replaced or repaired 15 traffic signs that had chipped paint or were damaged; repainted curbs
- Cleaned, clipped and maintained more than 100 street trees (and tree pits) in the neighborhood between Rainier Avenue S. and ML King Jr. Way S
- Placed more than 10 tons of asphalt grindings on neighborhood streets to smooth out roadway shoulders between South Kenyon and South Othello Streets
- Pothole Rangers used more than 3 tons of asphalt to repair potholes and to install 3 large asphalt shims
- Repaired or provided preventive maintenance for 38 street lights in the immediate neighborhood to restore lighting to optimal levels
- Installed a new curb parking space and sign for Seattle Police Department vehicles that wish to take a break at the park
- Repainted the lines on two existing basketball courts
- Created tree wells and added mulch to more than 30 street trees and removed ivy from 20 trees
- Pumped out and removed debris from 20 catch basins, cleaned 28 sewer inlets and over 150 feet of ditch lines
Volunteer Activity
- Youth from SPU's Earth Service Corps stenciled 90 drains with our message, "Dump No Waste, Drains To Lake"
- Preschoolers from local daycare planted flowers at Othello Park
