Mayor Greg Nickels Kicks Off "Clean Seattle"
Participates in First of Many Neighborhood Cleanup Events
March 3, 2002 - Armed with trash bags and brooms, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, city crews and neighborhood volunteers today picked up trash, planted flowers and generally "spiffed up" Othello Playground in southeast Seattle to kick off the Clean Seattle initiative.
A major item on Mayor Greg Nickels' 100-Day "get it done" list, "Clean Seattle" emphasizes cleanup and beautification of the city.
A bevy of busy city crews, business and civic organizations, and neighborhood volunteers painted and freshened park facilities, removed graffiti from public structures, and replaced wood chips under swings to improve the surface. Workers swept the roads around the park and repaired streetlights where necessary. The City's "Pothole Rangers" also filled potholes in and around the park.
Partners in "Clean Seattle" are Seattle Arts Commission, Seattle City Light, Seattle Parks and Recreation, Seattle Police Department, Seattle Public Utilities, Seattle Transportation, Department of Design, Construction and Land Use and the Department of Neighborhoods.
