Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

The Mayor's Clean Seattle Initiative made its first trip to the Magnolia community on February 28. More than 70 volunteers from the greater Magnolia community were on hand to help out with cleanups at the Magnolia Community Center , the retail core and the newly acquired Smith Cove Park . Work activities included taking out invasives and other brush at Smith Cove Park , replacing litter cans in the retail core, removing graffiti from signs and storefronts, planting flowers to beautify the area and picking up litter.

Attendees for this event included King County Councilmember Larry Phillips, Mayor Greg Nickels and Magnolia Chamber of Commerce president Dan Bartlett.

Special kudos to Eagle Scout Bart Bangert of Troop 80 who teamed with Parks and Recreation staff and a host of eager volunteers to cleanup Smith Cove Park, to local merchants who donated food for this event and Seattle Department of Transportation who provided over 100 flowers for volunteers to plant. Other City Departments supporting this event included Seattle City Light and the Department of Neighborhoods, which was instrumental in organizing the event.

Cleanup Activities:

• 2 .5 tons of asphalt to patch 15 potholes and 4 sidewalk shims



• Replaced approximately 26 street signs



• Curb Paint - repainted 6 zones



• Swept 4 curb miles



• Provided approximately 100 primroses for planting in streetside planters



• 25 streetlights repaired or updated



• 5 bags of garbage 24 bags of invasive plants removed



• Removed 15 graffiti tags from playground structure in park



• Removed 6 graffiti tags from city signs



• Removed 2 racist/hate tags from a public phone booth



• Community painted out/removed graffiti from 1 private building



• Painted out graffiti tag on wood sign post near downtown magnolia
