Final Report on Clean Seattle Initiative

Cleanup:
Lake City Way and Surrounding Neighborhoods

Date of Cleanup:
March 27, 2002

Target Area:
25th Avenue NE to 35th Avenue NE between NE 123rd and NE 130th

Departments:
Parks, DON, Seattle Transportation, City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, DCLU, Arts Commission

    Cleanup Activities:
  • Collected 95 bags of litter and removed litter and trash 1,425 pounds from 7 miles of streets
  • Repaired 55 street lights repaired (either new bulbs or entire new heads or other preventive maintenance in the immediate neighborhood to restore lighting to optimal levels)
  • Cleaned 8 illegal dump sites, removing 4,010 pounds of debris
  • Removed more than 230 graffiti tags and/or stickers from city street signs, poles, traffic control boxes and other equipment in the greater Lake City neighborhood
  • Placed more than 10,000 pounds of asphalt grindings on neighborhood streets to smooth out roadway shoulders
  • Used more than 2,000 pounds of asphalt to repair potholes, patching 6 potholes
  • Installed 30 cubic yards of granulithic for children's play
  • Pruned 15 trees in the parks
  • Installed 20 cubic yards of mulch around trees in the parks.
  • Replaced Rainbow sign at Lake City Playground
  • Painted over 3,000 square feet of walls in Lake City Mini park
  • Effected the removal of thirty-three 55 gallon drums from a testing site in front of a local retail store
  • Removed over 25 illegally posted signs from city poles
  • Installed beauty bark and planted summer blooming flowers and fall bulbs in the in the median strip on Lake city Way and barked other city tree pits in the neighborhood.
  • Swept more than 11 curb miles of streets, removing 33 cubic yards of debris from these streets
  • Replaced or repaired 12 traffic signs that had chipped paint or were damaged
  • Removed 5 cubic yards of ivy at Lake City Mini Park
  • Pressure washed 16,858 square feet of hard surfaces at Davis and Lake City Mini Parks
  • Added 3 to 5 cubic yards of sand in cracks at Davis Park
  • Replaced drainpipe at Lake City Mini Park
  • Planted 24 flowers as part of beautification effort in Davis Park
  • Inspected 920 feet of drainage lines to ensure these were free of blockages
  • Cleaned two catch basins and maintained 610 feet of drain lines

    Miscellaneous
  • Installed 10 new ribbed fluted styled litter receptacles in the Lake City Way business district , replacing the older A Framed litter receptacles
  • Removed 6 pairs of shoes from city owned power lines
  • Area merchants picked up an estimated 80 grocery carts from nearby neighborhoods
  • Emerald City waste company replace four dilapidated dumpsters in the area
  • Two area merchants removed litter and graffiti from their property at the request of city staff
  • Installed safety fencing at Albert Davis park
  • Conducted 45 residential inspections with referrals to DCLU for junk storage, inoperable vehicles and vacant houses

    Volunteer Activity
  • Students from Olympic Hill Elementary participated in litter cleanup
  • More than 22 adult volunteers from the community came out to help pickup up litter in the community
  • Preschoolers from Aunt Sandie's Day Care joined in litter pickup efforts
  • High School Students from Nathan Hale stenciled drains with our message, "Dump No Waste,
  • Drains To Lake"
  • Roadway Structures crews painted the retaining wall at Lake City Way NE and NE 95th Street at the request of the community.

    Other
    Department of Parks and Recreation staff joined forces to enhance the Lake City Community Center. In the building custodians buffed the floors, cleaned the windows, and assisted in set up and take down for the spaghetti lunch provided by the Lions Club. Outside staff cleared and cleaned the area around the Will Rodgers monument. New life was brought to the monument itself by cleaning the copper surfaces with an environmentally friendly cleaning solution (which contained fresh lemon juice and salt).
