Report on Clean Seattle Initiative Cleanup:
Judkins Area Cleanup
Date of Cleanup:
April 26th (city crews) and 27th (volunteers)
Target Area:
South Jackson and South Judkins, between 20th and Martin Luther King
Departments:
Parks, DON, Seattle Transportation, City Light, Seattle
Public Utilities, DCLU, Arts Commission
Cleanup Activities:
- Swept 34 lane miles of residential streets
- Mowed 5 miles of overgrowth with mechanical mower and performed associated hand cutting
- Collected 279 bags of litter and removed 4185 pounds of litter and trash from 10.2 miles of streets
- Cleaned 4 illegal dumps, removing 8,600 pounds of debris and cleaning another 8 acres of public open space
- Removed 127 graffiti tags from city lights, poles, signal control boxes and signs
- Patched 3 potholes using ½ ton of asphalt
- Repaved 20' by 80' patch of asphalt street where the street had settled 3'
- Mowed and trimmed 15 acres of Park and DON property
- Edged 10,722 feet of side walks/path ways
- Repaired or replaced 64 street lights
- Pressure washed 4500 square feet of hard surface
- Pruned 15 large trees
- Installed 12 tree wells
- Pruned 20 large shrubs
- Trimmed 600 feet of shrub beds
- Cleaned 4 planter boxes
- Pressure washed spray feature
- Pressure washed 14 picnic tables
- Replaced or painted 15 cans and lids
- Replaced knocked down home run fence at 2 ball fields
- Replaced 225 feet of rotting barrier logs with 6 large rocks to prevent illegal parking
- Installed 2 large rocks at entry to prevent tire ruts in parking strip
- Replaced approximately 500 square feet of asphalt.
- Replaced electric hand dryer in South Comfort Station Women's room.
- Removed graffiti over lights on North Comfort Station and performed a complete graffiti sweep of the entire park.
- Repaired roll-up door on North Shelter House.
- Replaced paper towel and toilet paper holders in Comfort Stations.
- Striped lines in South Parking Lot.
- Painted "water spray towers", garbage can lids ad comfort station doors.
- Move and re-install 6 trash can receptacles and their footings.
- Clean up landscaped area behind new backstop, fill ruts and remove construction debris.
- Rake and clear area around bench on East side of the park.
- Replace old plastic bench material with new wood material.
- Placed 2 small concrete slabs, moved and installed onto the slabs a bike rack previously located at the North field.
- Rodded 600' of sewer line (removing roots, and other possible blockages)
- Cleaned and inspected 25 inlets and related catch basins
- Work to be done: Pump 6 catch basins
- Maintained 3 traffic signs and painted 3 curbs
- Pruned 42 street trees
- Barked tree pits on Jackson Street and worked with Parks on weeding and planting of median on Judkins Street
Miscellaneous
- 7 illegal signs removed from power poles
- 6 pairs of shoes removed from lines
- 5 properties have had initial inspections conducted by DCLU staff and warnings have been sent to the owners advising them that the properties have code violations.
- 3 other three properties will be inspected this week and staff will follow a path similar to that described for the other five properties.
Volunteer Activity
- Nearly 100 volunteers came together to cleanup Judkins Park including:

- 9 volunteers from CityYear who participated in litter pickup efforts, raking grass, weeding, barking, and planting activities
- 10 members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority joined in weeding, barking and planting to beautify the park
- 10 students from Garfield Teen Center assisted the Mayor with weeding, barking and planting the traffic circle and other landscaped areas of the park
- 7 volunteers from Yesler Terrace assisted in weeding, barking, and planting the traffic circle with the mayor, and continued to work in the park, weeding landscaped areas
- 7 volunteers from the community came out to help cleanup the park in the community
- Removed a total of 165 bags of grass/edgings from the park
- Planted 100 shrubs and flowers
