Report on Clean Seattle Initiative
Cleanup: U District
Date of Cleanup: December 13-14th
Boundries: Campus Parkway to 52nd and 9th to 16th NE
Departments: Parks, Department of Neighborhoods, Seattle Transportation, City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, DCLU, Department of Corrections, SPD Crime Prevention
Cleanup Activities:
- City Light crews worked over several days to remove and paint out 222 tags and graffiti on City Light poles from 9th Avenue to 15th from Campus Parkway to 50th. Most of the graffiti were on poles along 9th,10th and 11th Avenues.
- SPU's Graffiti Rangers removed 153 graffiti tags and conducted 71 paint outs of graffiti from public property.
- SDOT Street Maintenance crews mechanically swept approximately 18 curb miles, which included the University Way NE, Brooklyn Avenue NE, and 15th Avenue NE. Crews also swept the Brooklyn and University alleys between 41st and 51st after they were manually cleaned.
- Parks maintenance crews power washed Christie Park.
- City Light repaired 246 street lights and took down several signs and pairs of shoes hung over wires.
- Parks staff also completed its leaf clean up along 17th Avenue the week following the University District cleanup.
- SPU directed Department of Corrections staff were on hand to pickup illegal dumping in the alleys in the University District.
- SDOT Traffic Signs and Markings crews cleaned 18 signal control cabinets, replaced 11 damage traffic control signs, painted 200 feet of curb, cleaned 9 parking meters, cleaned and removed decals from 92 traffic control signs.
- SDOT Street Maintenance crews also partnered with the Park Department to clean leaves from 17th Avenue NE, north of NE 45th Street. No Parking signs were posted in this area and crews mechanically and hand cleaned the leaves.
Miscellaneous
- Parks staff provided wreath wires and tools for the wreath making project. Parks staff also provided a tent (a good thing on such a rainy day!) for the Mayor and community speakers. SPU provided the wreath "greens" from the cedar River Watershed. Wreaths adorned the AVE throughout the holidays.
Volunteer Activity
- Along with the Mayor and Mrs. Nickels,13 volunteers from local organizations helped to create 30 large wreaths that were placed on street poles on University Avenue.
- Community volunteers painted out several large graffiti tags on private property along University Avenue and 50th Avenue N.E.
