Council Passes Dance Ordinance
Measure increases youth protections at dance venues
August 12, 2002- Mayor Greg Nickels today complimented the City Council for passing the
All Ages Dance Ordinance (AADO), a measure designed to promote youth safety and regulate
all age dance clubs and events. The new measure replaces the Teen Dance Ordinance,
legislation that was often criticized for being outdated and difficult to enforce.
"I'm pleased that the Council decided, as I did, that it was time to replace the Teen
Dance Ordinance. This new measure promotes common-sense regulation, allows young people to
attend all age dances, and insures that there are adequate safety provisions in place.
Let's dance!" Nickels said.
The AADO, passed by a vote of 6-2, is expected to increase the number of all age dances
in Seattle while also requiring that background checks be run on event promoters and that
promoters provide adequate security at all age dance events.
