Pioneer Square

In 2010, Pioneer Square stakeholders and the City collaborated in the development of an economic revitalization strategy "Pioneer Square 2015 A Strategy for Seattle’s First Neighborhood" and are working together on implementation.  The Strategy lists a set of actions for the City and neighborhood including:

Community

  • Actively Engaging businesses in supporting economic growth
  • Building the neighborhood’s organizational development and advocacy capacity
  • Focus on the district’s historic building assets and enhance to built environment
  • Effectively market, brand and promote Pioneer Square

City

  • Support Pioneer Square’s historic buildings and a positive  development environment
  • Provide economic development support and investment
  • Provide supportive utility, parking and transportation infrastructure
  • Ensure an environment of public safety and civility

Successes to date:

  • City provided funding to create the Alliance for Pioneer Square- an economic development -focused community non-profit that includes the Pioneer Square BIA
  • City invested $120,000 in the Alliance for 2012 to support retail recruitment, neighborhood marketing and other activities.  Retail strategy completed, retail recruitment/business retention specialist hired
  • Civility Committee actively working to bring a new, publically accessible restroom facility to the neighborhood
  • SPD hotspot policing strategy implemented
  • Worked with the City Council to pass the Livable South Downtown rezone
  • Worked with Daniels Development and the King County Council to resolve final issue and allow the Stadium Place development in the Century Link Field north parking lot to get underway.
  • Launched the Trail to Treasure historic wayfinding project in partnership with the National Park Service
  • Provided a fiber backbone to increase broadband capacity in support of the neighborhood’s significant high tech sector.
  • Ensured that the First Hill Streetcar would serve Pioneer Square
  • Support for  Nord Alley activation activities
  • King Street Station renovation
  • Convened neighborhood human service providers to begin dialogue on common interests
